Old Allegheny: The Life and Wars of General Ed Johnson

“Old Allegheny: The Life and Wars of General Ed Johnson” by Gregg S. Clemmer

From the dust jacket: Old Allegheny was a man of many nicknames, including Fence Rail, Old Clubby, and Brute. When he was angry, he could work his ears like a mule, and he “boasted a strong personality and loud voice that commanded attention where physical good looks did not.” He earned promotions for extraordinary bravery during the Mexican War, and struggled to prevent wide-spread genocide in Northern California. His contemporaries and subordinates called him brave and commended his qualities as a soldier, and yet his grave has been lost. General Ed Johnson was an interesting man worth reading about.
